First principles
Do you remember your salt analysis days in the chemistry labs ?
I vividly remember those. I can even remember some golden spangles, newton rings, pungent smell, heavy lead nitrate on my hand and more. That was a fascinating time.
I loved chemistry because my teacher made me think from first principles. She truly taught me what is atomic design. In many ways she taught me the Pareto principle and principles of elimination. She made me realise if direction is right, speed is easy. I might have forgotten the periodic table fully but in just couple of hours I can get back to understanding things again. The concepts got etched into my body not just my brain. The only time I felt sad for scoring 199/200 and not 200/200 because I loved every word I wrote in that exam. Out of that love I wanted to take chemical engineering and live with those acids and bases for rest of my life.
Only 2 years ago I realised my love was not about chemistry as a subject but the first principles of the discipline. The awe of how things work. That made me perceive the subject beyond what is visible to naked eye.
I fell in love with design for same reasons. The romance continues and I am still excited about the little things. Latest hobby is to spot the typeface based on construction 🤟
